At this event, the first focus will be on the “eat” segment, the food. The Benchmark Restaurant will offer a delicious hot buffet. Soft drinks, coffee and tea are included. Other refreshments can be paid for individually (The facility is licensed.)
The food and socializing - “talk” - will be followed by the “learn” segment. Four Pecha Kucha presentations will be given, followed by the main presentation, Building Confidence in the ESL Learner, delivered by Jennifer Weiler, Brett Basbaum and Audrey Beaulne.

Main Presentation: Building Confidence in the ESL learner
Self-efficacy (i.e., self-confidence) plays a vital role in learners’ persistence, motivation, and academic performance. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the four sources of self-efficacy, reflect on how it affects personal achievements, and learn how to apply the concepts to guide their students towards success in the classroom.
Jennifer Weiler, MEd, is an experienced LINC and ESL literacy instructor with a passion for designing lessons that build learners’ confidence and help develop learners’ literacy concepts, skills, and strategies. She currently works in LINC at Immigrants Working Centre in Hamilton and as a TESOL trainer at Peel District School Board.

Brett Basbaum is an ESL instructor currently working in the ESL Learning Centre at the Hamilton Public Library. She has taught LINC for several years as well as international students in the Summer ESL program at McMaster University. Last year she also had the amazing opportunity to teach in Dalian, China.

Audrey Beaulne is a LINC instructor at Immigrant’s Working Centre in Hamilton. She has taught literacy through CLB 5 in her 10+ years of teaching.

Technology in ESL Classrooms by Frank Bieri
Frank Bieri, Acting Associate Dean, School of English Language Studies at Niagara College, is co-Author of Have Your Say 3: Listening and Speaking Skills and Practice from Oxford University Press and a long term faculty member in the School of English Studies. He holds a Masters degree in Education, and throughout his teaching career, has developed an educational philosophy that is guided by people’s desire to learn. Frank’s specific areas of interest include classroom design innovations, engagement technology, learning enhancement software, and new EdTech initiatives. A Little Presentation With BIG Impact! by Heather Cordeiro
Heather Cordeiro is an EAP professor in the School of English Language Studies at Niagara College. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in both English and History, a TESL Diploma and a Master of Education degree focused on Distance Education. Heather is experienced in web-based technologies and computer-assisted language learning programs and has most recently been researching the areas of assistive technologies, universal design and differentiated learning in order to support differently abled students in the ESL classroom. Vocabulary Myths and Misconceptions by Jim Papple.
James Papple, Speaking Coordinator in ESL Services, Brock University. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in both Linguistics and Psychology and a Master’s degree in TESL. He was a contributing author to the Culture Link Series from Oxford University Press. Over the last decade, Jim has volunteered with TESL Niagara and has been serving as a member of the TESL Ontario board for 5 years. His research interests include experiential learning, vocabulary acquisition, translingualism, and blended classrooms. Impact and Influence: The ESL Instructor’s Culture by Adrianna Semerjian. Adrianna Semerjian recently completed her Masters of Education in TESL and Instructional Leadership. Her research interests include cultural awareness and the role of the instructor’s culture on teaching and learning. Adrianna has taught EFL in South Korea, college preparation, and CLB Levels 1-8. She has also volunteered with TESL Niagara and made numerous conference presentations. Adrianna currently teaches LINC with the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.
